Dermaplaner Aftercare: What to Do in the First 72 Hours
By Essence Esthetics: Skin · Lashes · Brows | July 9, 2026
We’re based in Glendale, right off the East Kentucky Avenue corridor bordering Cherry Creek and Denver neighborhoods, so we see a lot of busy schedules and sunny-day skin. This guide keeps your glow protected.

The #1 rule after dermaplaning is simple: keep your skin calm and protected from sun for the first 72 hours. We’re big on walking you through steps and listening to feedback, and that same mindset matters at home. When you follow the basics, you keep that smooth, bright finish you came in for.
0–24 hours after dermaplaning: keep it cool, clean, and makeup-free
Dermaplaning is a gentle exfoliation technique, but it still leaves your skin a bit more open and reactive right away. In Glendale’s semi-arid summer weather, skin can feel tight fast, so we focus on soothing and sealing in moisture.
For the first day: we generally recommend skipping makeup for 12–24 hours, avoiding hot water and steam, and keeping workouts light to avoid heavy sweating.
Do this the same day
- Cleanse with a mild, non-scrubby cleanser. Lukewarm water only.
- Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer. Look for barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides or hyaluronic acid.
- Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ the next morning (and reapply if you’re out). Colorado’s high-altitude sun is no joke.
Avoid this the same day
- Hot showers on the face, saunas, and steam rooms.
- Heavy exercise or anything that has you sweating a lot for 24–48 hours.
- Picking at any dry patches. Your skin will even out better if you let it be.
24–72 hours: your glow is showing, so protect it like you mean it
This is the window where people love how smooth makeup looks and how bright their skin feels. But it’s also the window where sun and irritation can steal that “fresh” finish. Clients with sensitive skin regularly tell us they’re relieved when we’re patient and careful with products, and your aftercare should keep that same gentle vibe going.
Glendale tip: If you’re out near Cherry Creek for errands or shopping, bring SPF with you. Reapply and use shade or a hat, especially in July when UV runs high.
- Makeup: If your skin feels calm, you can usually return to makeup after 12–24 hours. Keep it light and avoid rubbing or heavy buffing.
- Sweat: Give intense workouts 24–48 hours. Sweat plus friction can sting and trigger redness.
- Pools and hot tubs: Skip pools, hot tubs, and soaking for about 48 hours. Chlorine and heat can irritate freshly exfoliated skin.
Days 3–7: no “extra exfoliation” if you want that dermaplane finish to last
Here’s where people accidentally overdo it. Dermaplaning already did the smoothing. Your job this week is to keep your barrier steady so you can enjoy that bright look clients love after dermaplaning and facial-style services.
Hold off on these for about 3–7 days
- Retinoids (retinol, tretinoin)
- AHA/BHA acids (glycolic, lactic, salicylic)
- Scrubs, cleansing brushes, gritty exfoliants
- Strong acne spot treatments that tend to sting
If you’re not sure what counts as an “active, ” send us a quick message with your product list. We’ll tell you what to pause and what’s safe to keep.
Simple products that pair well with dermaplaning (and won’t fight your skin)
You don’t need a whole new shelf. You need a calm routine that supports that smoother texture dermaplaning gives you in about 40 minutes.
- Cleanser: gentle, fragrance-free, no exfoliating acids for the first few days.
- Moisturizer: barrier-focused. Ceramides and hyaluronic acid are usually a good match, especially in Colorado dryness.
- SPF: broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily. If you react easily, a mineral sunscreen often feels calmer.
One habit that helps: Keep hands off your face. It’s boring advice, but it’s the difference between “glowy and smooth” and “why am I irritated?”
When to reach out to us in Glendale, plus an easy next step
A little pinkness or sensitivity right after dermaplaning can be normal, especially if you’re naturally reactive. What we don’t want is anything that’s getting worse instead of better.
Reach out if you notice: increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, signs of infection, or sensitivity that hasn’t improved after 72 hours.
“Got a lash lift, brow lamination and dermaplaning. Loved the results !! I have sensitive skin and she was very patient with my and I didn’t have any reactions to the products.”
